The NeoClassical era of Climbing Gyms
Climbing gyms used to be dirty garages where climbers trained when they couldn’t get outside. Then climbing went mainstream: birthday parties, date nights, Groupon deals, and the Olympics. Now you can pull on plastic in every decent-sized town in America. Overall we think it’s a good thing. It’s probably why you found out about this incredible sport in the first place. But it also might be time to rethink what a climbing gym can be.
Indoor climbing is evolving into its own sport, increasingly dominated by competition-style parkour paddle dynos and other moves you wouldn’t consider doing on real rock without real risk (or if you are a person over the age of about 25).
The upside of climbing going mainstream is that smaller, independent gyms can start to specialize and meet their members’ needs more directly. Building exactly what they want rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
The magic of Brooklyn is the intersection of the old school and the modern: a gritty industrial past continuously reimagined by the world’s best designers and forward-thinking entrepreneurs.
Brooklyn Uprising will be a neoclassical climbing gym: a modern take on the old school model.
Setting routes that truly help climbers develop the skills and movement vocabulary they need to send projects.
Coaching, training protocols, and gear to help committed climbers build serious physical and mental strength.
Thoughtful curation, exceptional design, lighting that doesn’t feel like an operating room, a killer audio system, and yes, we’re going to have a sauna.
